A South Bend woman was arrested Tuesday for dumping her newborn baby in the trash can of a hospital restroom in Olympia, Washington.
Olympia Police arrested Jasmin Marie Ritchey, 23, for second degree attempted murder and second degree abandonment of a dependent person.
The baby is still alive and in satisfactory condition at Tacoma General Hospital.
According to officials, Ritchey went to Providence St. Peter Hospital early Tuesday morning by ambulance for a medical complaint not related to pregnancy.
Without revealing her pregnancy to hospital staff, while at Providence, police said Ritchey went to the restroom and gave birth to a baby boy.
Law enforcement said she intentionally placed the infant in a plastic bag and hid it in a garbage can.
Nurses found the baby in the restroom and were able to successfully resuscitate it. It was transported to a pediatric hospital for treatment.
Ritchey is currently in the Thurston County Jail.
In Washington, it is legal to drop off a newborn baby, up to 3 days old, in the hands of hospital staff, at a staffed fire station, or at a federally designated rural clinic.
