The father of John Mikel Obi, England's Chelsea FC star has been found. Michael Obi who was abducted in Jos since August 12 was found alive in Kano, northern Nigeria.
Mikel played for Chelsea last weekend despite not knowing his father’s where about.
Confirming the development, Mikel’s elder brother, Tony Obi told journalists that the father was actually found in Kano alive and unhurt. “Yes there is a development. They have found our father. He is alive, but the family's position is that we will not speak on the matter until tomorrow, (today). We will address the press,” Tony said cheerfully.
His abductors are now in police custody in the northern Nigerian city.
According to BBC’s Yusuf Ibrahim Yakasai, Michael Obi’s face shows signs of the beatings that he says he endured during his ordeal.
Michael Obi was last seen in the city of Jos August 12. His car was only found there last Wednesday. The Obi Senior told the BBC that he was kidnapped in Jos and transferred to Kano where he was kept until found yesterday. His abductors according to the BBC are now in police custody in Kano.
Police authorities in Kano said he was rescued from his kidnappers who were holding him captive in a hideout in Kano. Kano police commissioner, CP Ibrahim Idris, who paraded five suspects arrested alongside the rescued man said the operation was carried out based on a tip off from another suspect earlier arrested in Plateau State.
The police boss said Obi senior was rescued when a combined team of police from the Plateau State police command led by CSP Okechi Salifu and reinforcement from the Kano police CID command stormed the hideout of the kidnappers.
