MTN, GLO, AIRTEL Risks Sanction in Nigeria

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said it would penalize three major service providers to the tune of one million naira if they failed to improve the quality of their services by the end of November.

Spokesperson for the regulatory body Reuben Muoka listed the three service providers as MTN, Globacom and Airtel in a statement issued in Lagos on Wednesday.
The statement said the company had been given 30 day from Nov. 1, 2011 to improve the quality of their services.

“This follows a dismal performance by the three operators on quality of service from the result of an independent monitoring exercise carried out by the Commission across the country," it added.

The statement said the commission had been inundated with complaints from subscribers that the operators were not doing enough to improve on their unacceptable quality of service which had persisted for too long.

“The research carried out by the commission revealed that all the three operators had failed to meet with the four key performance indicators that are crucial for quality of service improvements," the statement said.

According to the statement, the commission will stop the operators from further sale of SIM cards by the end of November 2011 if they failed to meet the key performance indicators set by the Commission.
