A Zimbabwean court has released three women accused of raping a dozen men for ritual purposes on US$300 (Sh300,000) bail each.
The three identified as Rosemary Chakwizira, 28, and sisters Sophie, 26, and Netsai Nhokwara, 24, have been in custody since October 9 together with Thulani Ngwenya, the only man charged in the case.
They were arrested after they tried to retrieve a bag with 30 used condoms from their car, which had been involved in an accident.
Detectives believe the women were part of a syndicate that has been raping men for the past two years to obtain their semen.
Prosecutors charged the four with 17 counts of aggravated assault after some of the victims reportedly picked up their alleged attackers during an identity parade.
A Harare magistrate ordered the suspects to surrender their travel documents and to report to the police twice a week as part of their bail conditions.
Their trial has been set for November 28.
The women were accused of frequenting Zimbabwe’s highways to pick up male hitch hikers.
They would allegedly take the men to secluded spots where they would rape and them before collecting their semen.
Police believe more women are involved and have warned men to be alert as they were still in danger of being attacked by the rapists.
According to research conducted by the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) last year there has been an increase in the number of underworld syndicates in the country who collect sperms from unsuspecting victims.
The study entitled “The Tragedy of Procrastination – A Case Study of the Sexual Behaviour Patterns of Street Youth in Harare in the era of HIV and Aids Pandemic" found that most of the female rapists worked with businesspeople who use the sperms to create concoctions to enhance their wealth.
