Former IMF boss seeks lifting of bial conditions

Lawyers for Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund, will apply to have his bail conditions removed at an unscheduled court appearance on Friday that has raised questions over the state of the case against him.

Benjamin Brafman, a lawyer for Mr Strauss-Kahn, told the the court that date would include an “application to remove all bail conditions”. Financial Times reported.

The restrictions, which included house arrest, were imposed after Mr Strauss-Kahn was accused of sexually assaulting a hotel maid in New York.

Ahead of the court appearance, the New York Times on Thursday said the case against the former IMF chief was “on the verge of collapse”, citing unnamed law enforcement officials who said the maid’s credibility and the consistency of her testimony were in doubt.

In response to a question about the credibility of the maid, Mr Brafman indicated there was a connection between the bail application and that issue.

Mr Strauss-Kahn, who was this week succeeded as IMF head by Christine Lagarde, is currently living under house arrest on $1m bail under the supervision of armed guards in a Manhattan town house.

A court spokeswoman earlier on Thursday said the appearance by Mr Strauss-Kahn, who is awaiting trial on seven charges including attempted rape, had been requested by both prosecutors and defence lawyers.

The New York Times quoted an unnamed law enforcement official saying that the case was “a mess on both sides”.

Mr Strauss-Kahn had not been due in court again until July 18 and his trial was not expected to start until later this year or early next.

After his previous court appearance on June 6, where he pleaded not guilty, the defence and prosecution began the discovery process through which they negotiate over the sharing of evidence and testimony.
