About two persons were feared killed and 11 others seriously injured yesterday when a building collapsed in Nyanya, a surburb of the federal capital, Abuja.
The two-storey building which was under construction collapsed at about 10.15am, trapping several workers who were working on the project and some women and children who were food vendors at the site.
When NEXT got to the scene of the accident, sympathisers made up of traders and spare parts dealers at a nearby spare parts markets had rushed in to rescue those trapped before the arrival of the officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Civil Defense Corps, Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps and Police.
The 11-rescued victims were immediately taken to Asokoro and Maitama general hospitals in Abuja, according to NEMA Zonal coordinator, Ishaya Chinoko.
One of the traders, Ifeanyi Chukwu Idoko, told journalists that his crew rescued four persons alive and one dead before the arrival of NEMA rescue team.
"However, one of the victims rescued by the combined rescue team died in the ambulance when he was about to be taken to hospital," he said. "The slow pace of rescue operations, due to lack of basic equipment like caterpillars and others were responsible for the number of deaths recorded so far." It was gathered that one woman and some children who sold food and pure (satchet) water at the construction site were still trapped at the time of going to press.
Another witness, Suleiman Askira, who claimed to be one of those working at the construction site, said in Hausa that his brother, Ashiru was still trapped in the collapsed building and was weeping profusely while asking for help.
