ABC News on July 17, 2012, reported that Provigil (modafinil) the prescription stimulant has been found abused by healthy persons who use it to boost energy and improve focus.
Provigil is an analeptic medicine used to enhance wakefulness in grown ups who experience excessive sleepiness due to obstructive sleep apnea, shift work sleep disorder, or narcolepsy.

Dave Asprey, a successful executive of a billion-dollar Internet security firm who regularly takes Provigil in the morning was tracked by ABC News report. According to Asprey, he performs better on cognitive tests when he was on Provigil.
However, medical professionals warn of potential side effects of the drug, which includes potentially lethal rashes, sleep deprivation and worse. The chief of the Sleep Medicine department at the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Dr. Joanne Getsy, told ABC News that “Provigil is not a substitute for sleep. Sleep deprivation can cause and worsen heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.”

Provigil (modafinil, Manufactured by Cephalon, is listed as a federally controlled substance (C-IV) because it can be abused or lead to dependence. Provigil was approved by the FDA on December 24, 1998. Cephalon submitted a supplemental new drug application (sNDA) to market Sparlon in December 2004, a brand name drug containing higher doses of modafinil. The FDA rejected approval of Sparlon in 2006.
Using data from AERS, from 01/01/2004 to 03/31/2012, aggregated and standardized by the AdverseEvent RxFilter process, we identified 5,590 patients who experienced a serious adverse event where Provigil was identified as a suspect drug causing the event and 1,097 patients who experienced a serious adverse event where Provigil was identified as the primary suspect.
The most commonly reported side effects were headaches, somnolence, and anxiety. We identified 352 hospitalizations and 74 patient deaths where Provigil was identified as the primary suspect.
