It’s not very often that asteroids fly this close to Earth. The asteroid YU5 2005 is believed to be passing by earth today.
NASA happened to record a video of it as it passes by, using their Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, California. The video was created by using six images over a period of 20 minutes, which were captured over a period of a little more than two hours.
The asteroid named YU55 2005 was approximately 1.38 million kilometres away when the images were captured. At its closest point, YU55 2005 will be rougly 324,600 kilometres from the centre of the Earth.
The path of the asteroid, YU55 2005 brings it close to Earth and Venus often, but this would be the closest it has ever come, at least in the past 200 years. YU55 2005 is a spherical asteroid, which is roughly 400 metres in size. It rotates slowly, once every 18 hours.
NASA’s Spaceguard program scans the skies for any space bodies that might come close to the Earth, and possibly threaten it. The next object close to the size of YU55 2005 to come close to Earth will be 2028. The last time an object came this close was back in 1976, but it wasn’t noticed then.
